Bang KOK?

Hello Followers, we are now in Siem Reap, Cambodia! Here is our last few days in what was Bangkok.

We have been staying on Khao San Road which is a backpacking mecca. The day doesn't start until 11 am and when we got up on Sunday at 5.30 am to leave the street was still packed with food stalls and party-goers. Very cool place, plenty happening - cheap clothes and amazing street food stalls.

We were told the place to be on a Saturday morning was the weekend market where 8000+ stalls were set up offering mostly new and used clothing to food and pets.......here are the pets.

Bunnies were sold in dresses for 150 Baht each, around $5

Puppies

 arboreal gliding possums

Then we convinced Ali to eat a scorpion on Khao San Road

Jackie thought Ali's scorpion looked so good she had to try some

When it gets hot in Bangkok - some will do anything to keep cool

So we decided to take the train to Cambodia as it was the cheapest option - $1.30 for a 7 hour ride to the border. The catch - it left at 5.55am on a Sunday morning. Food is sold from what seemed like 3-4 people with baskets continuously walking up and down the train singing in Thai

We love public transport!

Open no-glass windows on the train keep things fresh, even at 6 am its singlet and shorts weather

I thought this guy looked like my Cat back home - street cats are everywhere

Views from the train

Jackie gets a little crazy in the mornings.........

Some people couldn't keep awake

And there i go

Rice Fields, really beautiful

We like to refer to these as saggy skin cows....

Getting ready to disembark at the border

We made it! the train claimed it would get us there by 11.35am when really we arrived at 1.20pm. Thats just what its like in Thailand... We were feeling for those who booked on the later train that supposedly gets in at 6.20pm - if that train was as late as ours the people would be stuck as the border closes at 8pm..

Tuk Tuks lined up awaiting cashed up travelers to exploit

We tried to be cost effective by squeezing 5 into our tuk tuk

The driver however had different ideas and took us to an official looking scam office where they were oh so lovely to us all until they asked for $1200 baht ($45) - we had read beforehand that the visa fee is only payable on the Cambodian side and is $20 so after we refused we were told to get out and walk the remaining 2km to the Thai border - rude but it was an experience laughed off

the long line of backpackers

And our last views of Thailand - Hello Cambodia! Cheap Cheap Cheap! Thailand has by far been our most expensive country. In terms of backpacking Indonesia wins hands down, Malaysia and Laos come in second - we have enjoyed Thailand a lot and it is a beautiful country however with this type of travel allows great comparisons. Cambodia has already been amazing will post again tomorrow when we are off to Angkor Wat.
